JOSEF KOUDELKA Gitans. La fin du voyage . Paris: Delpire, 1975. Oblong 4° (296 x 270mm). 60 black and white photographs. Original dark grey cloth, spine and front cover lettered in silver, front cover blocked in blind, original black photo-illustrated dust-jacket (light wear and one short tear at extremities). Provenance : inscription from Koudelka ('Josef') on half-title verso. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY KOUDELKA: 'To Allan the first man who published my pictures outside Czechoslovakia'. The French and English language editions were published simultaneously by Delpire and Aperture. The Open Book , pp.304-05; The Photobook , p.230 ('it was the publication of Gypsies in 1975 that sealed his reputation as ONE OF THE FINEST PHOTOGRAPHERS STILL USING THE HUMANIST DOCUMENTARY MODE').
