3 volumes. Various paginations, sizes, and bindings. Comprising: Letters to the Right Honourable Edmund Burke occasioned by his Reflections on the Revolution in France. (12mo) modern paper boards, paper label. Third Edition, corrected. Reprinted in New York by Hugh Gaine, 1791. The Use of Christianity, especially in difficult Times; A Sermon, Delivered at the Gravel Pit Meeting in Hackney, March 30, 1794. (12mo) stapled paper covers backed with linen tape. Printed for J. Johnson in London, 1794. Memoirs of the Rev. Dr. Joseph Priestley. To the Year 1795. Written by Himself. (12mo) period quarter calf with marbled boards, morocco spine label and decorations tooled in gilt; patterned endpapers. Extra illustrated from portraits, sculptures, newspaper clippings and even strips supposedly taken from Priestley's letters on the endpapers and blank leaves. Reprinted in London from the American Edition, by the several Unitarian Societies in England, 1809. Joseph Priestley (1733–1804) was a British natural philosopher, dissenting clergyman, political theorist, theologian, and educator. Today he is best remembered for his isolation of "dephlogisticated air" (oxygen), but his determination to defend phlogiston theory left him isolated within the scientific community. His outspoken support of the French Revolution aroused public and governmental suspicion; he was eventually forced to flee in 1791, first to London and then to the United States after a mob burned down his home and church. He spent the last ten years of his life living in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.
