FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, with the map showing the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana, portions of Texas and the east coast of America. Along with Tonti's account (see lot 6), Joutel's is an important narrative of La Salle's ill-fated expedition. La Salle received royal approval for his plans to establish a French colony in Louisiana in 1684. Intending to establish a settlement at the mouth of the Mississippi, his ship instead went off course from France and landed in Texas. He established a colony there which eventually failed, resulting in La Salle's assassination by his own men. Joutel survived the insurgence and his account is the best description of La Salle's last expedition to Louisiana and Texas.
