JOUTEL, Henri (c.1640-1735). Journal historique du dernier voyage que feu M. de la Sale fit dans le Golfe de Mexique, pour trouver l'embouchure, & le cours de la Riviere de Missicipi, nommee a present la Riviere de Saint Louis, qui traverse la Louisiane . Paris: Estienne Robinot, 1713. A fine first edition of an important eye-witness account of La Salle’s second expedition, with the first map plotting the results of his last two voyages. Commissioned to establish a French base at the mouth of the Mississippi, La Salle’s disastrous expedition – culminating in his murder by a companion - is well known. Joutel’s journal is the ‘most reliable eye-witness account of La Salle’s two-years wanderings in Texas. The map, based on La Salle’s Mississippi explorations, was the first accurate delineation of the river’ (Howes). Howes J-266; Sabin 36760. 12mo (166 x 95mm). Engraved folding map of the eastern half of the present-day United States. Contemporary French speckled calf with the gilt arms of Louis-François-Armand, Duc de la Rochefoucauld, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece. Provenance : Duc de la Rochefoucauld (1695-1783; binding, ink stamp of bibliothèque de la Roche-Guyon on title).
