JOYCE, James. Work in Progress , in: Eugene JOLAS et al. (eds). transition . Paris: transition [nos 1-20], The Hague: The Servire Press [nos 21-24] and New York: transition [nos 25-27], 1927-1938. 27 numbers in 25 volumes [nos and double issues], 4° (196 x 142-230 x 155mm). Plates. (Some variable light browning.) Original printed wrappers with covers after Joan Miró Fernand Léger Paul Klee Hans Arp Kurt Schwitters Man Ray et al. (spines faded, some chipping causing small losses, wrappers of no. 1 detached, upper wrapper on no. 27 partially detached). Provenance : occasional inscriptions on preliminary leaves. FIRST EDITION. ALL OF PART I, 3 CHAPTERS OF PART II, AND ALL OF PART III OF FINNEGANS WAKE . Fragments of Finnegans Wake had previously been published in transatlantic review (whose editor Ford Madox Ford gave the title 'Work in Progress') in 1924 and in other journals. However, it was not until Jolas began serial publication in transition that substantial portions appeared; as Slocum and Cahoon note, 'In each case where transition duplicated a previous publication there was an extensive revision of the text; the text was usually revised again before final publication in Finnegans Wake '. The instalments were issued under the following titles: 'Opening Pages of a Work in Progress' ( transition no. 1); 'Continuation of a Work in Progress' (nos. 2-22); 'Work in Progress' (nos 23 and 26); and 'Fragment from Work in Progress' (no. 27). Together, these fragments form pp.3-216, 219-275, 282-331, 338-355, and 403-590 of Finnegans Wake . Slocum and Cahoon C70. Sold as a periodical not subject to return. (25)
