JOZA UPRKA (1861–1940) A Girl from Hroznová Lhota Starting price: 65 000 CZK (2 453 EUR) Hammer price: 100 000 CZK (3 774 EUR) Description dimensions: 29 x 18,5 cm (h x w) period: Around 1915, Moravia This miniature painting is a typical study of folk costumes from the Slovácko region, which is featured throughout the artist's oeuvre. In part the painting presents period Romantic trends, but primarily it is founded in respect for the artist's hometown and its traditions. He especially latched on to this theme after he returned from France, where he studied modern trends. In a letter to his friend Josef Klvaňa, Úprka admitted he had been deeply influenced by French modernism and added that what he had seen was enough for several years of work. Oil on wood, signed on bottom left "Jož. Úprka"; on the back is an inscription verifying the authenticity of the work.
