JOZA UPRKA (1861–1940) A Girl in Folk Costume Starting price: 180 000 CZK (6 667 EUR) Hammer price: 1 300 000 CZK (48 148 EUR) Description dimensions: 75,5 x 44,5 cm (h x w) period: 1918, Moravia Although often considered a purely Moravian painter, Joža Úprka had strong ties to Prague, Munich and even Paris. He lived and studied in these cities of art, and he made good use of his experience after he returned to Moravia. His paintings featuring folk and folklore themes garnered attention in Paris, where they were exhibited as part of the Salon of French Artists in 1894. The painting A Girl in Folk Costume offered for auction, brings together realism and elements of modern trends that can especially be seen in the face and scarf. There is a strange symbiosis, but one that does not lack the artist's own style -- on the contrary. Oil on canvas, signed on bottom left "JU 18". Assessment: Professor PhDr. Tomáš Vlček, CSc. Dimensions with frame: 112 x 81.5 cm
