JUDAICA]. BIBLE, HEBREW and ENGLISH. Abridged School and Family Bible in Hebrew and English. Three Parts. I. Pentateuch...II. Earlier Prophets...III. Selections from Later Prophets, Hagiographa, and Apocrypha. Elaborated by Jacob Levi Levinski, With the Cooperation of Dr. H. Vidaver, and other Hebrew Theologians. New York: L.H. Frank & Co., 1869-1871. Large 8 o, 3 vols. in one. Titlepages in Hebrew and roman letter within decorative borders, Hebrew and English text on facing pages, following the Apochrypha a 2-pp. addition of "Approbations" (many recommendations of various rabbis), and a 6-pp. "List of Subscribers" arranged alphabetically by city. (Very minor soiling to title). Contemporary half dark green morocco, spine gilt-lettered, edges speckled red, with binder's ticket of "U Holzer, Bookbinder...Boston." (Worn, covers detached, tear to spine.) Rabbi H. Vidaver (1833-1882) was a distinguished theologian, rabbi of New York's Congregation B'nai Jeshurun. "He is the earliest known American to contribute to the European press and his articles kept European Jews informed about the Civil War" (Goldman). In his long preface, Levinski explains that it was "great neglect in the study and reading of the Holy Scriptures" which induced to produce this careful abridgement. The original scriptures, he adds, are for many "an inaccessible mountain," partly due to its great length; in addition, many passages are judged "improper to be read by the daughters of Israel." Levinski hopes that his edition will fill a great need , for, he complains, "the schools have no books to supply the pupils." He calls for teachers to "give up your English catechism and abstracts of Biblical History and devote all your time you can spare to this school Bible." Goldman 15; Singerman 2115.
