Der deutsche Originaltext erschien erst 50 Jahre später im Druck. Das klassische Werk über Japan aus der Zeit des allgemeinen Einreiseverbots für Europäer. Im Anhang werden u.a. Teekultur, Paphierherstellung und Akupunktur in Japan behandelt, ferner mit separatem Titelblatt ( dat. 1728) "The second appendix... being part of an authentick Journal of a voyage to Japan, made by the English in 1673". Die Kupfer mit der schönen Japankarte (Walter 76A), Gebietskarten und -plänen, Ansichten (darunter Jedo und Nagasaki), mythologischen und kultischen Darstellungen, Pflanzen (Tee), Tieren und einigen Schrifttafeln. - Sorgfältig gereinigt und Tafeln neu angefalzt. Die große Japankarte gleichmäßig leicht gebräunt. Ganz vereinzelt kl. Randeinrisse, in Bd. 2 Taf. 22 mit kl. Wurmgang im w. Unterrand sowie bei Taf. 27 kl. Randläsuren restauriert und 2 kl. Ausrisse (mit Nachzeichnung der Einfassung) ergänzt. Im Innendeckel 2 gest. Wappenexlibris "Littlecote" und "Thomas Wallis M.D.", freies Vorsatz mit hs. Widmung Scheuchzers an Wallis. Two volumes. Second English edition, first printed in English in 1727, title of vol. 2 of our copy still dated 1727. With engraved title and 45 engraved plates, mostly double-page, some folding, including large folding map of Japan. "His history of Japan has long been recognized as the most authoritative account of that country published at that time" (Cox). Two annexes in vol. 2 with the history of tea in Japan and the manufacturing of paper, the second containing an account of a voyage to Japan by an English vessel in 1673. The English translation is by Johann Caspar (Gaspard) Scheuchzer, the librarian of Sir Hans Sloane, who had acquired Kaempfer's manuscript and botanical specimens after the author's death. - Carefully cleaned, plates mounted on new guards. Minor browning to map of Japan. A few small marginal tears, small worm hole to lower margin of plate 22, restored marginal tears to plate 27 (with reinstatement of border in mss.). Bound in contemporary calf, somewhat rubbed, tears to both ends of lower joint and 3 holes to spine of vol. 1, vol. 2 small tear to lower joints and tail of spine chipped. Engraved armorial bookplates "Littlecote" and "Thomas Wallis M.D.", and Scheuchzer's handwritten dedication to Wallis.
