KEATS, John (1795-1821). Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St. Agnes, and Other Poems . London: Taylor and Hessey, 1820. First edition of Keats's last and finest volume of poetry. Published in July 1820, when Keats was seriously ill and soon to depart for Italy, it includes poems such as his ‘Ode to a Nightingale’, ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’ and ‘To Autumn’, that would help cement his reputation as one of the greatest English poets. This copy formerly belonged to John William Mackail and his wife Margaret, the daughter of Edward Burne-Jones John William Mackail was a classical scholar, literary critic and poet, and the Oxford Professor of Poetry from 1906-1911. He published a translation of the Aeneid in 1885 and was commissioned by the Morris family to write the first biography of William Morris in 1899. MacGillivray A3. 12mo (180 x 104mm). Half-title, 4 advertisement leaves at end (some faint spots, heavier at beginning and end). Uncut in original drab boards (rebacked, spine label renewed, some small stains); housed in folding cloth case and quarter morocco slipcase.
