KENNEDY, JOHN F., President . Autograph letter signed ("John Kennedy") as Senator, to Gerald Y. Murphy, Washington, D.C., n.d. [c. 17 December 1955]. 3 1/2 pages, 4to, U.S. Senate stationery. [ With :] Autograph free frank ("John F. Kennedy") as Senator, on cover addressed in his hand to the above at the "New Bedford Institute of Textiles & Tech. New Bedford Massachusetts," clear duplex postmark "Palm Beach, Fla. Dec 17 5 PM 1955." Top edge cut in opening, otherwise in very fine condition. A POSSIBLY UNIQUE KENNEDY FRANK AS U.S. SENATOR Senator Kennedy writes: "Many thanks for your invitation to speak on the 1st. Mr. Lewin also wrote to me about it. Unfortunately, it is impossible for me to leave Washington during the week -- especially towards the close of the session -- when the roll-calls are so frequent. On Saturday & Sunday, I must be in the mid-west to fulfill an old commitment. I am sorry that I cannot be with you -- because of the importance of the affair -- but I am especially anxious, after having been away so much last year, not to be absent this year..." Kennedy's autograph franking signature is extremely rare at all periods of his career, and the present Senatorial example may well be unique. One 1944 frank as Naval officer is traceable (sale, Darvick, 2 August 1990, lot 234, $3,000), and a cover of Senatorial date, not illustrated and of unverifiable nature was listed as part of a lot in the Joyce sale (Siegel, New York, 11 December 1990, lot 180). Moreover, it is evident that the present franking signature was applied at the same time as the letter was written. We are not aware of any other Senatorial or Presidential frank of Kennedy. This item was exhibited in the World stamp Expo '89, Washington, D.C., 17 November--3 December 1989.
