KENNEDY, John F. Printed document signed (“John Kennedy”), a Reader’s Digest reprint of John Hersey’s “Survival.” Boston: John J. Ford [1960]. 6 pages, 8vo. “Jack Kennedy, the ex-Ambassador’s son…also lost his life” Hersey’s gripping account of Kennedy’s PT-109 crash and rescue. He begins with the Navy’s erroneous report of JFK’s death: “But sorrow at the PT base was premature. This is the acccount of what really happened. It shows that among all the horrible things in [the] Pacific War, there is one wonderful thing: the will of men to live.” The article appeared in the 17 June 1944 issue of The New Yorker. A footnote records that “the author has donated his fee for this condensation to the Navy Relief Fund.” And Kennedy saw that some of the money went to Kirksey’s widow. This reprint was issued by the Massachusetts Committee for John F. Kennedy for President of the United States. [With:] DONOVAN, Robert J. PT-109: John F. Kennedy in World War II (New York: McGraw Hill, 1961). Capt. Katsumari Yamashiro’s copy, extensively annotated by him throughout. Also with a Japanese language edition of the book. Yamashiro was captain of the Amagiri, which rammed PT-109. His notes angrily refute the view advanced by Donovan (based on Amigiri crew interviews) that the destroyer deliberately rammed PT-109. Yamashiro states that he ordered evasive action for fear that a collision would result in exploding torpedos that could damage the destroyer. Together 3 items.
