Text in Spanish. Title with large hand-coloured engraved design by Jan Luyken heightened in gold, with letterpress text below, 6pp text, 50 hand-coloured engraved maps and charts, all double-page on thick paper, on guards, hand-coloured initials and tail-pieces. (Light offsetting and browning.) Contemporary calf, panelled in gilt, gilt covers with central arabesque of atlas holding an armillary sphere, with armillary tooled cornerpieces, spine gilt in eight compartments, lettered in one, others with armillary tools, mottled edges (ties lacking, extremities rubbed, upper joint restored, lower joints slightly cracked). A VERY FINE AND RARE SPANISH EDITION OF KEULEN'S IMPORTANT ZEE-ATLAS. Johannes van Keulen is first registered as a bookseller in Amsterdam in 1678, and from 1680 began to publish his principal opus, the Zee Atlas , initially in Dutch or French, with 36 maps and later from 1681 with a Spanish title and a polyglot text. This edition of 1683, with the text solely in Spanish, is not recorded by Koeman and has not appeared at auction in the past 25 years. The Spanish editions of the Zee Atlas are all rare. Koeman lists only one copy of the 1681 edition (lacking title and with 40 maps) and two other examples of the 1681 edition have appeared at auction in the last 25 years. In this copy the world map is by Nicolas Visscher cf Koeman IV Keu 4.
