Hand-coloured allegorical title by Aernout Naghtegael after Jan Luyken 8pp letterpress text in Spanish, the final page with blank pasted over leaf obscuring index of charts (listing 40 charts), 29 hand-coloured double-page charts, title and cartouches HEIGHTENED IN GOLD (small stain affecting outer margin of a few charts, several with short tears at lower centrefold, 6 shaved at lower margin). Contemporary Dutch vellum, covers pannelled in gilt with central arabesques incorporating an armillery sphere, g.e. (spine lightly rubbed, upper half of covers dust soiled). A fine early example of van Keulen's Zee-Atlas . Very rare cf. Koeman Vol IV Keu 4, recording only one example of the Spanish edition text with 40 maps, offered for sale in 1968. A further example, with 32 uncoloured charts was offered at Sotheby's 7th November 1985 lot 56. The title-page of this example has the privilege note at the foot of the title dated 1680, with the final digit 0 of the printed date above filed in by hand. Although the index of charts lists 40 maps, it was obviously prepared in advance, as all the early French and Dutch editions of 1681, only have 29 or 36 charts Cf. Keu 2, 3A and 3B. The selection of the 29 charts and their order in this atlas is similar to Keu 3A (numbers 1,3,7, 13, 18 absent and substituted by five of the seven extra charts found in Keu 3B, this copy without the world chart).
