KIPLING RUDYARD. Departmental Ditties and Other Verses. Lahore, [1886]. Tall narrow 8vo, printed tan wrappers, with the flap to resemble an official envelope, most of spine chipped away, half of flap lacking, sides a bit stained, the red tape lacking as nearly always. One of approximately 350 copies. With numerous ink glossarial annotations in a contemporary hand (not apparently Kipling's) on blank verso pages and in text -- Plain Tales from the Hills, Calcutta, 1888. Olive-green pictorial cloth, extremities a little rubbed. The Usual second issue binding (with pictorial front cover), page number on p. 192 misplaced, 24 pp. of ads at rear dated December 1887. Bookplate and Ownership inscription (dated Bombay 1888) of V.S. Sandeman, 17th Lancers -- The City of Dreadful Nights and Other Places. Allahabad, 1891. Green-gray pictorial wrappers, spine worn and chipped, a few small pieces chipped from edges of front cover . First Published (Second Indian) Edition (and first with this title); the first was suppressed by Kipling and is known only in a handful of copies -- Letters of Marque. Allahabad, 1891. Red and blue cloth, worn, inner hinges cracked. Together 4 volumes, 8vo, original wrappers of cloth each in a half morocco slipcase. FIRST EDITIONS, except as indicated. (4)
