Engraved additional title by Romeyn de Hooghe portrait of the dedicatee Pope Clement X, 26 engraved plates, plans and maps, 14 folding, 19 illustrations. (Additional title lightly spotted with section of lower outer corner restored, some light spotting and browning, **2 with tear in text.) Contemporary mottled calf (rebacked and cornered). Provenance : Thomas Belasyse, Earl Fauconberg (1627-1700, inscribed 'Ld. Fauconberg's Book 1691'). FIRST EDITION with an interesting provenance. Thomas, then Viscount Fouconberg, married Mary, third daughter of Oliver Cromwell, and was actively supportive of the Protector. At the Resoration he became a staunch royalist, and Charles II made him Privy Councillor and ambassador in Italy. He was amongst those of the nobility who invited William of Orange to England, and in the same year was raised to the rank of Earl. Cicognara 3758; Olschki 17342.
