Contemporary marbled sheep (some light scuffing or wear). Provenance : E. Waterhouse (bookplate on endpaper); Cumston Public Library, Monmouth, ME (bookplate on pastedown, shelfmark and label on spine). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF THE KORAN, published by the firm Isaiah Thomas, the largest and most important publishing house in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Thomas adapted a translation of the French orientalist Du Ryer for the American market, with occasional notes, including Turkish traditions. Du Ryer was the envoy of the French king at Alexandria and Constantinople in the seventeenth century. His translation was the best available, and was frequently reprinted and translated into other European languages throughout the eighteenth century. Shaw & Shoemaker 10684.
