[Japan/Korea: the flag c.1944-45, with overpainting c.1952.] A rayon Japanese flag, 870 x 720mm. The flag over painted on one side and titled "First Marine Air Wing. John Kiraly " and the red circle labelled "Marine Fighter Squadron" One Fifteen" with the insignia, the flag decorated in ink and colors with a colorful depiction of map outlines of both Japan and Korea, images of a Japanese temple and Mt Fuji, as well as the flags of the UN, USA, Korea and Japan. The sides of the flag listing the 16 airbases in Japan and Korea that Kiraly had been stationed on. Provenance: War Museum. The Marine Fighting Squadron VMFA 115 was a famous fighter squadron. It was organized in 1943 as a Corsair squadron and joined the Pacific War in 1944, flying support ops in the Philippines, Okinawa and Sulu. In 1949 they were the first Marine Corps squadron to be equipped with the new Grumman F9F-2 Panther jet aircraft and were deployed in February 1952 to Pohang, Korea to provide aerial support. The squadron went on to serve in the Vietnam war, the Philippines, and the Gulf Wars.
