KRUZENSHTERN, Ivan Federovich (1770-1846). Voyage Round the World, in the Years 1803, 1804, 1805, 1806, by order of his Imperial Majesty Alexander the First, on board the Ships Nadezhda and Neva, under the command of Captain A.J. von Krusentern . Translated from the German by Richard Belgrave Hoppner London: John Murray 1813. 2 volumes bound in one, 4 o (272 x 210 mm). 2 hand-colored aquatint frontispieces, one engraved folding map, additional double-page genealogical table of British royalty (some mostly pale spotting to first plate, map and table). (Pale offsetting to titles, some soft creasing to last few leaves.) Contemporary half calf gilt, marbled boards (front cover detached, a bit worn). FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of the first Russian circumnavigation, which lasted just over three years. It was to prove of major importance for Russian knowledge of Japan, the Hawaiian Islands, South American and the northwest American coast. It further marked the beginning of Russian expansion in the Pacific, particularly in fur-trading. Kruzenshtern had a strong corps of officers, including Lisiansky, Langsdorff and Kotzebue, all of whom were later to conduct other important expeditions. An additional genealogical table not called for by Abbey or Hill is bound in with the second volume. Abbey Travel 1; Cordier 459; Hill, p.167; Kroepelien 693.
