He used much of his wealth to support the arts and was a key patron of Surrealism, in particular of Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Leonora Carrington and Pavel Tchelitchew. In 1964, he established the Edward James Foundation, a charitable educational trust for the promotion of music, craft and the fine arts.
