LA BROUE, Salomon de (1530-1610). Le cavalerice françois. Paris: Abel l'Angelier, 1602. Three parts and supplement in one, large folio (428 x 277 mm). Ruled in red throughout. Engraved title, vignettes, separate title-pages and paginations for second and third parts, more than 250 woodcut illustrations and diagrams in text (many full-page). (Dampstaining.) Contemporary Parisian gold-tooled calf, edges gilt (rebacked). Provenance : 1797 gift inscription on front pastedown; acquired from Louis Bondy, 1965. Second edition, the first to contain the engraved title by C. De Mallery, with the rare supplement at the end. La Broue's book is the first treatise on equitation written by a French equerry. It shows equine subjects and devotes large sections on equestrian events including tournaments and processions. Other sections are about bits, trappings, caparisons, and other subjects and are all depicted in the woodcut illustrations. Hofer, Baroque 18; Nissen, ZBI 2341.
