LA PLACA, Pietro. Relazione delle pompe festive seguite in Palermo ... nella celebrità della regie nozze di Carlo Borbone ... con Maria Amalia. . Palermo: Antonino Epiro, 1739. 4° (198 x 140mm). 9 engraved folding plates by Ant. Bova, Bernardo Bongiovanni and Francesco Ciché. (Light spotting in a few plates, linen strengthening on some versos at guards.) Modern red half morocco (lightly faded). Provenance : Luigi Bellani (title inscription). The wedding of Charles III, Duke of Parma and King of Naples (King of Spain from 1759) and Maria Amalia in 1738 were celebrated for three days at Palermo. The festivities opened with a "Te Deum", officiated by the Viceroy of Sicily, Bartholomeo Corsini; the cathedral was richly decorated by Nicolò Palma Palma also redecorated the facades and interiors of the royal and senatorial palaces for the balls and theatrical performances. Highlights of the celebrations, depicted in the engraved plates, included a fight between a lion and a horse, and fireworks held on the coast. A solid silver fountain was constructed for the occasion by the guild of silversmiths. See illustration on previous page . Berlin Kat. 3074 (imperfect); not in Palau.
