LABORDE, Comte Alexandre Louis Joseph de (1774-1842). Les Monuments de la France classés chronologiquement et considérés sous le rapport des faits historiques et de l'étude des arts . Paris: by P. Didot l'ainé [volume I] and by Jules Didot l'ainé [volume II] for Giard, 1816-1836. 2 volumes, broadsheet 2° (560 x 413mm). Half-titles, engraved title-vignettes, one by and after Laguiche, the other after Bance. Engraved frontispiece in volume I by Beaujean after Laborde's composition drawn by Jean Lubin Vauzelles. 261 etched plates and plans by L.P. Baltard, J.M.S. Bence, M.-A. Duparc, Georges Malbeste Joseph Perdoux, Mlle. A. Pillement, Benedikt Piringer Nicolas Louis Rouseau, and others after Bence, C. Bourgeois, Charles de Vèze, Vauzelles and others, 23 double-page. Type-ornament headbands. (Some scattered spotting, a few leaves and plates with short marginal tears, offsetting onto volume I title and volume II half-title.) Contemporary red morocco gilt by J. Wright, the covers with broad gilt borders formed of 4 acorn, grape-and-pomegranate and other rolls alternated with double rules, gilt-ruled board edges, turn-ins gilt with acorn rolls, the spines gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-pieces in 2, the others decorated with scallop, foliate and other tools (spines a little faded, a few minor marks on covers, lower board edges paint-marked), gilt edges. FIRST EDITION. 'LABORDE'S GREATEST [WORK] AFTER THE MAGNIFICENT VOYAGE PITTORESQUE ET HISTORIQUE DE L'ESPAGNE ' (RIBA Catalogue ). Les Monuments de la France was published as a series of 45 livraisons , each containing six plates (which were, according to Brunet, 'executées d'après le procédé Harding'). The present copy contains 118 plates in volume I and 143 in volumes II, which are numbered I-CXVI and CXVII-CCLIX. The discrepancy between the numbering and the actual number of plates is due to the accidental duplication of plates in both volumes; in volume I there are two plates with the caption for CV, and these two plates are repeated in volume II but both bearing the caption for CXVII (as in the RIBA copy). Brunet III, col.714; Quérard IV, pp.343-344; RIBA Catalogue 1710. (2)
