Volume I with hand-coloured etched aquatint title, volume II with colour-printed etched aquatint title-vignette. 156 colour-printed etched aquatint plates printed on 106 sheets, some finished by hand, one by Piringer after Schutz, 31 colour-printed etched aquatint head- and tailpieces, some finished by hand. (Some light spotting mainly affecting text leaves, vol. I lacking half-title, and with neatly repaired marginal tear on title and small marginal flaw on one plate.) Contemporary green morocco gilt, the covers with borders of broad and narrow rules, gilt fillets on turn-ins, spines gilt in compartments, lettered in three, gilt edges (spines slightly faded, occasional scuffing, corners lightly bumped. FIRST EDITION. The count of Lamberg who was the Austrian ambassador to the King of Naples, assembled a remarkable collection of some 500 vases, which included examples given to him by the Queen of Naples; the collection subsequently passed to the Emperor of Austria. The Collection des vases grecs catalogues and illustrates the most significant pieces from the collection, while seeking to avoid faults perceived in the illustrations of Sir William Hamilton's catalogues, and to render the objects with 'une extrême fidelité' (I, p.ix). Quérard judges the work's success thus: 'Cet ouvrage mérite une attention particulière pour sa belle exécution. On a cherché, autant que possible, à donner, pour ainsi-dire, le fac-simile des vases, avec toutes les couleurs et les figures qu'on remarque sur ces précieux monuments'. Quérard -- giving the imprint as Paris: Giard, 1824-1828 -- further notes that the work was originally published in 18 livraisons , with the first two appearing in 1813, but 'Les événements survenus en France, l'année suiv[ante], en suspendirent alors la continuation'; however, the publication dates given for the Blackmer, British Library, and Bibliothèque nationale sets are 1813 and 1824.
