LAFAYETTE, Gilbert du Motier, Marquis (1757-1834), Revolutionary war general . Autograph letter signed ("Lafayette"), to Samuel Smith (1752-1839), New York, 21 September 1824. 2 pages, 4to, blank integral, seal hole . In English. LAFAYETTE, ON HIS FAMOUS AMERICAN TOUR, RETURNS TO YORKTOWN AND MOUNT VERNON The hero of Yorktown looks forward to seeing Smith in Baltimore, a city "to which I am bound by many sincere ties of affection and gratitude." He gives a charming summary of his movements-still using the geographical terminology from the Revolutionary days: "An invitation from the city of Boston received and answered in France, and an engagement with my old headquarters of Albany have directed my first steps towards the eastward and up the North River. I returned hastily to New York in hopes to set off immediately for the Jerseys and Philadelphia...I shall proceed through Wilmington to Baltimore. My time is short in consequence of the rendez-vous at Yorktown before which I must have been at Washington, Mount Vernon and Richmond. The Monticello and Montpelier visits" will follow after the "Yorktown anniversary." Lafayette's tour - which lasted from August 1824 to September 1825 - was a seminal event in early American history. It was the means by which Americans closed the chapter on the Revolutionary era and honored the memory of the '76 generation. He visited all 24 States, met with President Monroe and the surviving, elderly Presidents from Revolutionary days, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams A fine letter from this landmark cultural event.
