[Speculum Romanae magnificentiae.] Rome: Antonio Lafreri, [plates dated 1546-72]. Folio (400 x 285 mm). 52 etched plates and 3 additional engraved plates, most double-page, some folding. 18th century vellum-backed boards. 7 plates slightly shaved, 5 with wormhole at gutter, 5 laid down (one with slight loss), one remargined, paper repair on verso of Hercules without loss, the additional plates inlaid or laid down, binding rubbed. Provenance: Vallis Dei (bookplate). Lafreri arrived in Rome from France in 1540 and began to publish maps and the views that would later be known as the Speculum Romanae magnificentiae, when he issued a title page bearing that name in 1570. The prints are chiefly elevations and cutaways of the buildings of Rome, including columns and ruins, but also depict sculptures and details from Classical Roman paintings including three plates of exotic animals—lions, elephants, and camels.
