LAMBECK, Peter (1628-80). Commentariorum de Augustissima Bibliotheca Caesarea Vindobonensi liber primus. --secundus . Edited by Adam Franc. Kollar. Vienna: Johann Thomas von Trattner, 1766-69. 2 o (410 x 255 mm), 2 volumes. LARGE-PAPER ISSUE. Engraved frontispiece portraits, vignettes, and numerous plates reproducing manuscript illustrations (some folded). FINE CONTEMPORARY VIENNESE BINDINGS, presumably by the Trattner workshop FOR PRESENTATION TO EMPRESS MARIA THERESA AS ARCHDUCHESS OF AUSTRIA: not quite uniform gold-tooled marbled calf, roll-tooled borders, large floral cornerpieces, arms block (within Rococo garland on vol. 2) in center of sides, small arms block and floral tooling in compartments of spines, morocco lettering pieces; uniform gilt, gauffered and marbled edges, marbled endpapers, (corners of covers a little worn). Provenance : Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa (1717-80), mother of Leopold I Grand Duke of Tuscany (later Emperor Leopold II), to whom the work is dedicated. Augmented second edition of this elaborate account of the manuscript treasures in the Austrian Imperial Library, which appeared soon after the first edition of the first two volumes and well before the project was abandoned in 1680, by which time six more volumes had been published. The vast scholarly works of Lambeck, Mabillon, and Montfaucon form the beginnings of scientific cataloguing of early codices. "These two highly characteristic Viennese rococo bindings may have been made in the binding shop of Trattner, the printer and publisher of the work, and Austria's foremost printer and typefounder. His vast establishment included a bindery which as early as 1756 is reported to have employed nine journeymen (Mayer, Wiens Buchdrucker-Geschichte , II, p. 34). Unfortunately, literature on the post-Gothic history of bookbinding in Austria is practically non-existent" (BBB Wittockiana 11). The printer's success was such that he built an imposing residence in Vienna that became known as the "Trattnerhof." He rented out rooms to Mozart and Constanze and was godfather to three of their children. Mozart held his famous subscription concerts in the Trattnerhof casino. (2)
