Engraved plain portrait frontispiece and 101 fine hand-coloured plates, 85 engraved and 16 lithographed, after Ferdinand and Francis Bauer, G.D. Ehret, J. Sowerby, J.T. Hart and others, engraved by Warner, Mackenzie, J. Sowerby, E.S. Weddell, Quieroz and others. (Occasional spotting affecting three plates in vol. I and one plate in vol. II, other light spotting affecting guard leaves only.) Uniformly bound in contemporary dark green half roan (joints rubbed at head and tail of spines, corners bumped and extremities lightly scuffed and rubbed). LAMBERT'S MASTERPIECE, INCLUDING SPECTACULAR PLATES AFTER FERDINAND AND FRANZ BAUER. 'Again and again one finds citations of Lambert's Pinus which are contradictory and give rise to confusion' ( Great Flower Books , 1990, p.110). The sole copy of this folio edition to sell at auction in the last 25 years (Sotheby's, March 15, 2000, lot 50) had 96 plates only. The first edition was begun in 1803 and completed in 1824 with a total of 58 plates. It then went through various changes in format and numbers of plates up until 1842. The plates in the present example seem to be made up from a mix of those prepared for the various folio editions of the work with images printed from smaller format plates apparently prepared for the octavo editions. Just as with the earlier editions, the make-up of each copy seems to vary: Henrey calls for 103 plates, while Nissen states 117 plates; 'All copies show differences' (Stafleu).
