LANDI, Gaetano. Architectural Decorations: A periodical work of original designs invented from the Egyptian; The Greek: the Roman...for exterior and interior decoration . (Small neat repairs to blank margins of title.) Original boards, letterpress title label on upper cover (neatly rebacked, free endpapers creased). A very rare series of unusual room designs in the Greek, Egyptian, Gothic, Roman and Chinese manner (each represented by six plates, numbered [1]-6, 1-6, 13-18, the final 12 unnumbered). It is not clear what constitutes a complete copy of this work; the title mentions the Etruscan and Attic manner, neither of which are represented. A copy of this work sold in our rooms, November 23, 1994, lot 176, contained 24 plates, numbered 1-6 and 1-18 with two plates in the Chinese manner loosely inserted, the plates dated between January and March 1810. The present copy includes 4 more plates, the 19th plate dated April 1810, and with no imprint or title on 10 of the final 11 plates and no plates numbered 7-12. Although the work appears to have been originally issued in parts from Jan. 1810, this copy in its publisher's binding appears to be complete, and was issued at 10 guineas. Very little is known about Landi, who issued this work from his address at the Sabloniere Hotel, Leicester Square. He describes himself as a Professor of the University of Bologna, although he may well have been involved in theatrical design. The work is dedicated to the Marquis of Douglas, former ambasssador of Russia, and through correspondence with Sir Hans Sloane, we know that Landi intended to go to Russia at the end of 1810.
