The works reprinted here ( Trait de mcanique cleste , Exposition du systme du monde , Thorie analytique des probabilits and Essai philosophique sur les probabilits ) represent Laplace's theories on mathematical probability, celestial mechanics, integral calculus, cosmology, and theory of games of chance. The Trait de mcanique cleste has been considered a sequel to Newton's Principia (Horblit/Grolier 63). Laplace's widow instigated the publication of this edition, which was then subsidized by the French state; the royal decree ordering this edition of the Oeuvres to be printed prefaces volume I.
