Not sequentially paginated, but more than 2” thick, with hundreds of pages of illustrated text. Original black cloth binding. Most notable of the Chinatown-related articles: Arnold Genthe “The Children of Chinatown” (from Camera Craft, December 1900) 6pp., with 7 sepia and half-tone Genthe photos – probably the first appearance of these pictures, which may have appeared, 8 years later, in his classic book, “Pictures of Old Chinatown”.. The first half, approximately, relates to San Francisco, California and the West, American Indians, and Mexico, the last half to various travels from Hawaii to Turkey and the Congo. Original magazine sources include Sunset, Overland Monthly, The Californian, Camera Craft, Harper's, Century and Scribner's. In addition to the Genthe piece, the collection includes Will Irwin, “Donaldine Cameron and the Chinese Slave-Trade in America” (from Everybody’s Magazine, July 1904), with 4 attributed Genthe photos and others by Charles Weidner; Frederic Masters, “Opium and Its Votaries” (The Californian, May 1892) with unattributed “Flash Light Photographs” and an explantatory, “Opium Den Pictures, How They Were Taken”; Masters, “Pagan Temples in San Francisco” (Californian, Nov. 1892); Mary Davison, “The Babies of Chinatown”, (Cosmopolitan, April 1900). There are also Edward S. Curtiss sepia photos in George Bird Grinnell, “Portraits of Indian Types”, and John Fox Jr. “Backward Trail of the Saxon” (Scribners, March 1905).
