Title: Large collection of antique barbed wire Author: Place: [n.p.] Publisher: Date: [n.d.] Description: Collection of samples of approximately 125 different varieties of antique barbed wire, each piece measuring about 51 cm (20") in length. A collection of antique barbed wire samples originally compiled by a member of the New Mexico Barbed Wire Collectors Association. An accompanying typed letter, dated 1984, reads in part: "Enclosed are about 125 different wires, which makes you an 'instant' wire collector!" A New Mexico Barbed Wire Collectors Association newsletter from 1984 is enclosed, as well as a few other pieces of related ephemera. The first patent in the United States for barbed wire was issued in 1867 to Lucien B. Smith of Kent, Ohio, who is regarded as the inventor. Joseph F. Glidden of DeKalb, Illinois, received a patent for the modern invention in 1874 after he made his own modifications to previous versions. Pieces not examined individually, sold as is.
