Large collection of letters by rabbis and rebbes (more than 60 letters), sent to R. Shmuel Szczedrowicki. [Eretz Israel and other countries, ca. 1940s-1960]. Letters related to rescue efforts and Holocaust refugees, assistance to Russian Jewry, rabbinical and educational matters in Tel Aviv, letters of Torah thoughts, New Year greetings and family letters. About half were written in the 1940s and deal with She'erit HaPleita and rescue efforts. Letters by rebbes: R. Nachman Kahane of Spinka; R. Yechezkel Shraga Lifshitz-Halberstam of Stropkov (one letter from him was sent from the Bamberg DP camp); the brothers R. Avraham Dov and R. David Twersky of Rotmistrivka (Rachmastrivka) [official stationery of the rebbes, with a list of addresses in Russian of family members who are in need of help and rescue, during the Holocaust years]; R. Avraham Yissachar Englard of Radzin; R. Yisrael Yosef Hurwitz of Ryglice; R. Avraham Abish Kaner of Haifa; R. Chanoch Bornstein of Sochaczew; etc. Letters of rabbis and heads of yeshivas from Eretz Israel and abroad: R. Yaakov Heinich Sankewitsh; R. Shmuel Yosef Rabinow; R. Tuvia Tavyomi; R. David Shparber; R. Meir Karelitz; R. Shmuel Yaakov Glicksberg (letter from Bukhara, 1944); R. Efraim Sokolover; R. Reuven Katz; R. Isser Yehuda Unterman; R. Ben Zion Chai Uziel; R. Ben Zion Brook; R. Yochanan Sofer of Erlau; R. Yaakov Galinsky; R. Simcha Elberg (editor of HaPardes); many more rabbis from Tel Aviv and Eretz Israel, the US, Canada and Europe. The recipient, R. Shmuel Szczedrowicki (1907-1978), son of Rebbe Meir Shalom of Białystok and son-in-law of Rebbe Pinchas Yissachar of Pińczów and Sosnowiec. Rabbi and rebbe in Białystok. Active in Agudat Yisrael in Poland, he was a trusted caller at the home of R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky. Rabbi in Tel Aviv and chairman of Agudat Yisrael in the city. During the Holocaust, he was sent to the Far East on rescue missions on behalf of Agudat Yisrael and the Organization of Rabbis from Poland, to tend to the needs of refugees in the Far East, in Siberia and throughout Russia. He served as a representative of the Jewish Agency and the exiled Polish government. Also in his later years, he was very active in educational and chessed matters, and stood at the helm of the clandestine activities of Agudat Yisrael in assisting the Jews behind the "Iron Curtain". 65 letters.
