Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Marcus Waterman attended Brown University before moving to New York to pursue his artistic career. Although he set up a studio Boston in 1875, Waterman traveled extensively within the U.S. as well as to Europe and northern Africa. He was known to have produced many sketches and studies exploring color and light.
