lot of approximately (50) freight bills and related documents for various shipments by wagon, steamer or packet ships. All documents dated 1848-1897 (many pre-Civil War), most with an Ohio or Kentucky connection. Many on elaborately printed letterheads depicting various modes of transportation, including a couple of rare Tennessee bills depicting covered wagons, one from the steamer Fanny Bullit that was used in the Civil War to carry wounded. Other receipts: Wm. M. Morrison, Samuel Clemens was a cub pilot on her ca 1857, one receipt from 1857, another from 1858, captured and burned by Confederates during the war; W. W. Farmer, receipt dated 1855, Way lists her as going to the Conderate registry in 1861; receipt for steamer Fort Gibson on the Memphis and Arkansas River Packet Co., at top Regular United States Mail Line, with 1872 date, another 1874; and several from 1880s advertising Regular St. Louis and Tennessee River Entire New Electric Light Packet, on the steamer W. F. Nisbet. Most seem to be for bulk materials such as pig iron, marble, and rivets, although a few for "case of cigars," "cask brandy," "two-horse farm wagon with brake and seat," and other commodities. Condition: Average condition is VG.
