Beschreibung:

Large silver (tested at least 800/1000) sideboard dish embossed and hand chased with the representation of the Marriage Ceremony of Louis XVI to Maria Theresa of Austria, infanta of Spain. Germany, second half of 19th century (cm 102x72) (gr 4600 ca.) (minor defects) The central scene of this artifact reproduces the same scene depicted on a tapestry 'de haute lisse' woven by the Gobelins manufacturing between 1665 and 1672 [508 x 680 cm, Paris, Mobilier national, Inv. GMTT 95/4] after a model from the series designed by Charles Lebrun for the tapestry "L'Histoire du roi". Though not presenting apparently any mark, the plate can actually be compared with a silver sideboard dish punched with the marks of the silversmith Simon Rosenau (1862-1890) and possibly of the Karl Kurzs Hanau workshop (1877-1929) [lot 166, auction n° 9491, 15/4/2016, Sotheby's, New York]. This second sideboard dish shows not only an identical embossed motif on the brim, but reproduces the prior episode and preparatory for the marriage between the King of France and the Infanta of Spain - the meeting of Louis XIV and Philip IV of Spain on the Island of Pheasants, June 7, 1660 - so as it is conceived and depicted on a preceding tapestry from the same series "L'Histoire du roi" [495 x 689 cm, Paris, Mobilier national, Inv. GMTT 95/3], still made by the Gobelins manufacturing between 1665 and 1668.
