LARREY, Dominique Jean, Baron (1766-1842). Mmoires de chirurgie militaire, et campagnes . Paris: J. Smith (vol. 3: J. Smith and F. Buisson), 1812-1817. 4 volumes, 8 o (199 x 122 mm). 17 engraved plates (2 folding), one signed by Franois Ple after J.-B. Sarlendire (some foxing, intermittent waterstains to margins, paper flaws to margins of ca. 5 leaves, 2 plates cropped touching image, b4.5(II) detached from sewing). Contemporary green roan spines, marbled boards (rubbed, small losses to one headcap). Provenance : A. Gubler (ink stamp in each volume); Socit d'anthropologie (ink stamp in each volume). Larrey's Mmoires not only presented his recollections of Napoleon's campaigns, but also described the medical innovations for which he was responsible and which contributed substantially to the high morale and success of Napoleon's armies. These included the introduction of the flying ambulance, which removed the wounded to treatment at the rear of the lines, even during the course of battle, and the practice of amputating severely damaged limbs immediately, a technique that was credited with saving many lives. The publishing history of Mmoires de chirurgie is discussed in Norman and Grolier Medicine . The present set, like a number of others, has volumes 1 and 2 (both published in 1812) in the apparently later issue with the imprint "Chez J. Smith", and volume 4 (published in 1817) in the apparently earlier issue, with the preliminary quire in 2 and quire 31 in 2. Cancels in this set are: vol. 1, 1/1, 1/2; vol. 2, 15/4, 22/7, 27/5; vol. 3, 3/1, 3/3, 3/4; vol. 4, 1/2, 11/6. Garrison-Morton 2160; Grolier Medicine 56; Heirs of Hippocrates 1212; Osler 3162; Waller 5610; Wellcome III, p. 451; Norman 1280. [ With :] LARREY, Dominique Jean. Recueil de mmoires de chirurgie . Paris: Compre jeune, 1821. 8 o (199 x 122 mm). 4 engraved plates by Ambroise Tardieu after D.A. Duponchel printed facing letterpress captions in the last quire. (Some foxing, waterstain to upper portion of textblock). Contemporary brown sheep spine, marbled boards (slightly rubbed). Provenance : A. Gubler (ink stamp); Socit d'anthropologie (ink stamp). In this volume Larrey presented the results of his continued research, observation and verification of medical treatments he had previously described in his Mmoires de chirurgie . Waller 5611; Norman 1281. (5)
