Paris: Philippe le Noir, 1527. 2° (251 x 185 mm). Title printed in red and black within a woodcut historiated border incorporating the printer's cipher, 54 (of 62) leaves and 2 (of 3) large folding maps of "Le mont de la Sibille" and the eastern hemisphere, a full-page woodcut in two compartments on the verso of the title-page, repeated on h1v, and 18 other smaller woodcuts in the text (of 19, lacking woodcut on k1), woodcut initials, some historiated. Double-column, lettres bâtardes. (Lacking genealogy of the Kings of Aragon [found between h3 and h4] and leaves e3, e4, k1, k2, k4, k5, k7 and k8 [woodcut device on verso] last 6 leaves partially supplied from another early edition, ownership inscription removed from title, some light staining.) 18th-century French mottled calf gilt with the ARMS OF MADAME DE POMPADOUR [Olivier 2399, fer 1] on sides, gilt spine (rebacked, old spine laid down). Provenance : Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, marquise de Pompadour (1721-1764, binding, sold in her sale Paris: Jean Thomas Herissant and son, 1765, lot 2251); Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), Duchess of Portland, a great collector, particularly of natural history specimens and shells (“Purchas’d at the Duchess of Portlands Sale by Mr. J. Brockett for 14 guineas” but not listed in the 1786 catalogue); J. Brockett (purchase note); Robert B. Hale, Esqr. Alderley (two bookplates); George Flore and Genevieve Dubois (green morocco bookplate). Second edition. An important work for its woodcut illustrations and the world map. “La Salle wrote his La Salade in about 1440 and this later woodcut [world map] is derived from a manuscript original no longer traced. It is a curious ensemble, based on medieval concepts combined with perhaps Pomponius Mela’s classical world and yet showing some later influences” (Shirley). The early description of Greenland is on the missing leaves e3 and e4. With two additional woodcuts on supplied leaves possibly from the 1521 first edition.
