Paris: Chez l'auteur, 1837. 8 o (224 x 143 mm). 4 plates. (Some scattered foxing.) Original printed wrappers, uncut and mostly unopened (spine largely perished); blue cloth portfolio. FIRST EDITION. Lasteyrie, who learned the art from Senefelder himself, was very instrumental in the early years of lithography and founded the first commercially successful lithographic printing house in France. A wealthy nobleman, Lasteyrie sponsored Engelmann in his lithographic work. Typographie économique was published late in Lasteyrie's career to demonstrate how the poorer classes could produce books, and was one of the first works to advocate self-publishing. RARE: NUC locates only copies at the Library of Congress and Yale; only two copies appear in auction records since 1975. Bigmore & Wyman I, 422 (calling for only 3 plates).
