LAURO, Giacomo. Antiquae urbis splendor.... descriptio. Rome: 1612-1615. 3 parts in one volume, oblong 2° (225 x 295mm). Engraved throughout. Title, section title, three dedication leaves, three portraits of the dedicatees, 137 plates, extra-illustrated with 17 additional plates, one folding, bound at the end. Contemporary red morocco gilt, covers panelled, the central panel with 'GL' monogram at corners, and oval containing armorial, the flat spine ruled in gilt with title lettered in gilt, gilt top and bottom edges (resewn, modern endpapers, ties lacking). Provenance : unidentified armorial (binding); J. de Sales (signature). A fine series of early views of Rome, much reprinted and issued in various combinations of plates, titles and dedications. The additional plates include Italian views by a different hand, and three views in Spain and Portugal (two cut-down and mounted). Laura was well-known for his views of Rome, in particular for this work and his Heroico Splendore della Citta de Mondo , Rome: 1642, which had 50 views and plans of Rome. Cf.
