London: Ernest Brown & Phillips The Leicester Galleries, 1927. 4° (255 x 210mm). 8° sheet of Leicester Galleries headed paper tipped onto upper pastedown with typed date 'February 1927' and typed text: 'ALBUM OF ILLUSTRATIONS TO COLONEL T.E. LAWRENCE'S "SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDON" * Of this Album twelve copies have been issued of which this is No 12.' with signature 'Ernest Brown & Phillips' beneath. 57 plates printed by Whittingham & Griggs, four double-page, after Eric Kennington Augustus John William Roberts et al. laid down onto leaves of heavier paper, the majority with printed captions. (Plates slightly bowed.) Original batik-patterned boards with bevelled edges (spine slightly faded, extremities a little rubbed, short splits on joints). Provenance : one caption amended in pencil -- Desmond Stirling Stewart (1924-1981; gift to his friend and literary executor:) -- Alan Neame (gift to:) -- H.K. Chan (by whom consigned to Bertram Rota for sale; loosely-inserted letter from Rota dated 24 September 1998 detailing the provenance). An advertising flyer for the Leicester Galleries exhibition. THE RARE ALBUM OF ILLUSTRATIONS IN THE ORIGINAL BINDING. The Album of Illustrations was composed of the colour plates printed for the 'Subscriber's' edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom which remained after all the subscriptions had been satisfied, and was issued to accompany the exhibition of illustration to Seven Pillars of Wisdom mounted at the Leicester Galleries in February 1927. Of the 12 copies produced, O'Brien locates three in institutional collections; complete copies of the album in the original binding are very rare at auction, and only one other complete copy in the original binding can be traced at auction since 1975 (for the Bradfer-Lawrence copy, lacking 4 plates and rebound, see Sotheby's London, 13 July 2006, lot 247). This copy is from the library of the writer and specialist on Arab affairs, Desmond Stewart, the author of T.E. Lawrence (London: 1977). (3)
