Voyage dans les mers de l'Inde A l'occasion du passage de Vénus, dur le disque du Soleil, le 6 Juin 1761, et le 3 du même mois 1769. Paris: L'Imprimerie Royale, 1779-81. 2 volumes, 4 o (251 x 197 mm). 27 engraved plates, mostly folding. Modern calf contemporary sides laid down with small gilt central coat-of-arms of Louis XVI (some rubbing). Provenance : Home Office (early stamp on upper covers). FIRST EDITION. Le Gentil's attempted to observe the transit of the in Pondicherry India twice. The first attempt failed, because the English had just occupied Pondicherry and Le Gentil had to watch the transit from his ship unable to make scientific observations. The second time 8 years later, he could not see anything, because of an overcast sky. "He used the intervening years to collect vast amounts of material on Indian astronomy and to make numerous excursions, from Madagascar to Manila, during the course of which he amassed observations on a broad spectrum of phenomena" ( DSB ), including religion, social life and customs in India, the Philippines and Madagascar.
