Beschreibung:

LE PAUTRE, Jean (1618-82). Les Oeuvres d'Architecture . Paris: Cellot and Charles-Antoine-Jombert, 1751. 3 volumes in 2, 2° (344 x 221mm). Letterpress and engraved titles to each volume, half-title to volume one, 2pp. preface Avertissement , 778 plates only on 732 leaves divided into 124 (of 125) suites, each generally consisting of 6 plates including a title plate. (Suites 113 and 120-21 slightly shorter, lacking suite 9 (containing 6 plates) and the 2-page list of plates to each volume, dampstain in lower corner intruding into some plate marks.) Early 19th-century green half morocco, marbled paper boards (lightly rubbed, leather torn at one corner). Provenance : Thomas Philip, Earl de Grey (1781-1859, Wrest Park bookplate). First collected edition of Le Pautre's etchings. The present copy was previously owned by Thomas Philip de Grey, first president of the Institution of British Architects from 1834 until his death in 1859. The plates are divided into suites, each illustrating an aspect of architectural ornamentation, such as friezes, panels, doors, alcoves, tombs, grottoes, fountains, and vases. Most plates bear the imprint of Pierre Mariette their original publisher, including some dated 1661 or 1659; Jombert added his imprint to the title pages and the title plates to the suites. The number of plates in each suite is usually six, but can range from 2 (suites 66, 83, 87, 114) to 26 (suite one); plates are sometimes printed 2 to a page, and 56 plates are double-page. The arrangement of the plates agrees with the Millard copy, varying slightly from the Berlin copy, except suite 45 which has 3 plates printed on 3 leaves. Millard 97; Berlin Kat. 313. (2)
