Le Pin--Vintage 1985
5 bottles per lot
LE PIN Le Pin has acquired a reputation as the most hedonistic Pomerol and a competitor to Pétrus since its acquisition in 1978 by the Thienpont family, long time owners of Vieux-Château-Certan. It was a discerning loan from Jacques Thienpont father that allowed for the purchase of the property. It was originally thought by Jacques to incorporate its vines into those producing VCC, however a difference in opinions set Le Pin about a separate path unique to that of VCC. As gemstone in the rough, the Thienpont family redefined the nearly defunct property, severely reducing yields and speeding up and controlling the fermentations as well as macerations. Le Pin sits ideally in the highest aspect of Pomerol, nearby are Pétrus, Certan de May and VCC, its soil is gravel and clay based but sandier than those grand vineyards. The philosophy at Le Pin is to approach it like a garden where attention to detail is paramount for fine winemaking. This may account for the earlier ripening in the grapes and the resulting opulent character of the wine. The expressive and exotic character of Le Pin is heightened in the winery through the unusual practice (for Bordeaux) of using new oak casks for the malolactic fermentation of the wine. This is extremely labor intensive and can be only done on small estates such as Le Pin where the production is scarce 600 cases. The results are a massive wine of incredible richness and concentration, yet creamy butter smoothness. Le Pin--Vintage 1985 Pomerol Levels: base of neck or better, one capsule cut, Chateau and vintage branded corks "This wine went through an unusual stage where it seemed disjointed, too oaky, and light, but that has all changed over the last 1-2 years. The wine is now a deep plum color with some lightening at the edge. The nose soars from the glass offering up an enticing fragrance of smoked herbs, sweet, jammy, curranty fruit, and toasty oak. In the mouth, caramel, toffee, and mocha blend with jammy cherry fruit to offer an unctuously-textured, thick, satiny smooth wine that is impossible to resist." Anticipated maturity: Now-2008. Last tasted 12/96 Robert Parker Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition (1998) 5 bottles per lot
