Journal of a Landscape Painter in Corsica.
London: Robert John Bush, 1870. Large 8vo (260 x 180 mm). Half-title. 1 map, 40 wood-engraved plates and 40 wood-engraved illustrations, all from originals by Edward Lear by J.D. Cooper, Pibaraud, Pegard, Pannemaker and Badoureau. Original brown cloth by W. Bone & Son with their ticket, covers blocked in blind, title and imprint in gilt on the spine, uncut. Condition : occasional light spotting; covers lightly soiled, heand and foot of spine and corners lightly bumped. Provenance : Mr & Mrs Hubert Leigh Bennett (author’s presentation inscription on title); Peter & Diana Opie (“ex Opie Collection” stamp on front free endpaper). a fine author’s presentation copy of the first edition of this charming work. the opie copy , in which the great landscape artist (and author of the famous Nonsense Rhymes ) illustrates and describes “the nature of the landscape in those portions of Corsica in which … [he] travelled” (preface). The presentation inscription reads “To Hubert Leigh Bennett Esqr & Mrs Leigh Bennett. / from Edward Lear Sanremo, April / the twenty tooth. 1879” and beneath his name on the title, the author has added a list six of his other books. San Remo was Lear’s base during later life, the climate suited his weak constitution, and it was a useful starting point for his various painting expeditions.
