LEAR, Edward (1812-1888). Seven autograph pen and ink drawings, each with a four- or five-line limerick, FOUR UNPUBLISHED, comprising: "An old Man, who when little", "A young Lady of Harwich", An old Man at a Casement", "An old Person of Oude", "An old Person of Calais", "An old Man, whose approach", and "An old Lady of Joppa", on unwatermarked paper, each 129 x 184mm. , (slightly soiled and spotted, marginal tears, 42mm tear in the second not touching text, four with text or illustration slightly affected by tight binding), bound with 32 leaves with text in three lines from the first edition of A Book of Nonsense , (spotted and slightly soiled, some tears occasionally touching text, one leaf (Peru/stew) trimmed with loss of last line of text). Later blue cloth (worn and loose). Provenance : Five signatures dated 1929 on verso of one plate; Ted Blackmoore (20th-century signature on lower free end-paper). AN IMPORTANT SERIES OF EARLY AUTOGRAPH LIMERICKS, THREE OF WHICH ARE UNRECORDED being the fourth, sixth and seventh, the second is also unpublished but is known in another autograph copy in the Berg collection. The first was later published in More Nonsense , but here the illustration is quite different to the published version, and the text has four variations; the third in A Book of Nonsense , with variations to the illustration and with one textual variant; and the fifth did not appear in print until 1988 when Allan Lane included it in Bosh and Nonsense , but with a small variation at the beginning of the third line. Edward Lear composed and published the first of his limericks for the amusement of the family of the 12th Earl of Derby, the father of Lear's patron Edward, the 13th Earl, which proved such a success that more were composed and published, these republished numerous times. From the variations and style of these drawings it would appear that Lear composed and drew these examples in the 1830's or early 1840's, possibly before the first publication of A Book of Nonsense in 1846. The plates in this volume comprise: Troy, Peru/do, Tyre, Bute, Rheims, Moldavia, Prague/plague, Nepaul, Kilkenny, Columbia, Norway, Kamschatka, Tartary, Berlin, Clare, Calcutta, Eyes, Dee, Burton, Chester, Hague, Vesuvius, Vienna, Gretna, Peru/stew, West/vest, Isles, Cape, Hull, Quebec, Marseilles, and Corfu. We are most grateful to Mrs. Vivien Noakes for her assistance in authenicating and describing this lot.
