Antwerp: Christopher Plantin, 1583-1584. 8 o (165 x 107 mm). Woodcut printer's devices on titles, fine mostly full-page botanical illustrations throughout. (Some browning and marginal worming to gatherings g-z.) Contemporary limp vellum, yapp edges, title in manuscript on spine (lacking two pairs of ties). Provenance : "Gaudet patientia du[ri]s" (Patience rejoices in difficulties) contemporary Latin motto dated 1584 on front free-endpaper; Guilielmus Marequis of Antwerp (early inscription front free endpaper, gift to:) Laurentius Beÿrlinx, Canon, Archpresbyter, and censor of the city of Antwerp (inscription recording the bequest dated 17 June 1624 front free endpaper); Charles and Mary Lacaita (bookplate); Leolyn Louise Everett (bookplate); Robert de Belder; An Important Botanical Library (Christie's New York 5 June 1997, lot 237). THE FIRST FLORA OF THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN REGION. FIRST EDITION, second issue of Rariorum aliquot , with the errors of the first issue corrected and the additional quires CC-DD8 containing further plants and an index, without quire Y which was printed later in Vienna and included in some copies. The only illustrated edition for 200 years and based on L'Ecluse's discoveries made during his journey through Austria in 1574. Second edition of the RARE Stirpium nomenclator . According to American Book Prices Current only one other copy of this second edition, and no other copy of the first edition has sold at auction in the last 30 years.
