LEDEBOUR, CARL FRIEDRICH Icones plantarum novarum vel imperfecte cognitarum floram rossicam, imprimis altaicam, illustrantes. Riga: Deubner; London, Paris and Brussels: Treuttel and Würtz; Brussels: Librairie de Paris, 1829-1835. 5 vols., large folio, 466 x 312 mm., new quarter calf gilt in nineteenth-century style, replacing the contemporary half russia, old cloth sides, uncut, plate 327 torn and expertly repaired, plates 479-500 with small circular MHS stamp, plates 5 and 466 foxed, smudges on plates 300 and 309, approximately 30 plates wih the support sheets darkened, despite these minor faults in very fine condition overall . FIRST EDITION. 500 hand-colored lithographed plates by W. Siegrist, Prestele and Schach after Bommer, Krüger, Müller, von der Pahlen and Scheffner. A VERY RARE RUSSIAN FLORA, printed and handcolored in exquisitie detail in a style reminiscent of the Bauers. Its celebrated predecessor, Pallas's Flora rossica (1784-1831), remained unfinished with a total of 126 of a projected 600 plates. Stafleu & Cowan did not see a colored copy of Ledebour, which is indeed their misfortune. Ledebour (1785-1851) was a German botanist, born in Stralsund (then Swedish Pomerania). He travelled with Bunge and Mayer in Russia and the Altai region (Stafleu & Cowan). Dunthorne 179; Great Flower Books , p. 64; Nissen BBI 1155; Pritzel 5138; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 4284.
