Sprole, Chaplain [of West Point], n.p., 10 February 1853. 1 page, 4to, addressed on verso, lined paper, neatly inlaid to a larger protective sheet, with engraving of Appomattox surrender, after Chappell. Mr. Dobson to have divine service in the Chapel at 12 M. on two days in the week during Lent. Before granting it I think it proper to inquire whether the Chaplain has any objection." -- LEE, Robert E. Autograph letter signed ("R E Lee") as President of Washington College, to Col. Thomas Williamson Register & Church Warden, Lexington, Va., 11 May 1867. 1 page, large 8vo, lined paper, slight soiling to corners, neatly inlaid to a larger protective sheet , with an engraved portrait. "It will be impracticable for me to attend the Council of the P.E. [Protestant Episcopal] Church on the 15th Inst. I therefore return the blank form enclosed in your letter of to day. I have seen Genl. Smith who will attend the Council & will much [better] represent Grace Church than I can." Together two items. Two letters from two different stages of Lee's career when his duties were educational rather than military. (2)
