LEHMANN, Joseph (1801-1873)]. A collection of letters addressed to Joseph Lehmann, and manuscripts presented to him, by members of the circle of Heinrich Heine and other German literary figures, including: HEBBEL, Friedrich (1813-1863). Autograph manuscript signed of 'An ein Mdchen', a poem, n.p., n.d., more usually known as 'Liebesprobe' (Test of Love), a brief lyric on the pains of love, differing in two words on two lines from the published text, one page, 4to , laid down on blue card (slight soiling, small loss to lower right margin, slight tear at centre fold, small modern label in upper right corner); HUMBOLDT, Alexander, Freiherr von (1769-1859). Four autograph letters signed and an autograph note signed, Berlin, Potsdam and n.p., 30 November 1837 - 15 July 1846 and n.d., in the earliest letter complimenting Lehmann on an article on Native American languages, discussing the state of philological studies in America and mentioning an outline article by Abraham Galatin (U.S. politician) in his possession, and the involvement of his late brother (Wilhelm von Humboldt, writer, philologist and educationalist) in the field (Alexander von Humboldt had himself travelled widely in the Americas in 1799-1804, and published a 35-volume account, Voyage aux rgions quinoxiales du Nouveau Continent, 1808-2 ); the remaining letters discuss other articles in the Magazin fr die Literatur des Auslandes , including an obituary of Foreign Minister Heinrich von Blow (who had served under Humboldt in 1819), with glances at his character (a man 'der unter einer anderen Staatsverfassung, unter anderen Lebensbedingungen sich zu einem groen Staatsmann erhoben haben wrde'), together 5 pages, 8vo , autograph envelopes (3 with small modern labels to upper corners, letter of 30.11.1837 with short tear to centre fold); together with a copy of a letter from Humboldt to Professor G.A. Klde, and notes and a retained copy of a reply in the hand of Joseph Lehmann; FICHTE, Johann Gottlieb (1762-1814). Autograph note, n.p., n.d., with excuses for not being able to answer properly ('Ihre Landsleute geben mir [...] zu thun') and referring to Schelling, one page, approximately 140 x 190 mm (small modern label in upper right corners), cut autograph signature pasted below text. The collection also includes autograph letters by: Giacomo MEYERBEER, a brief note with an enclosure they had discussed that morning; Leopold von RANKE (historian, two letters), asking Lehmann to forward him an article, and referring to Tasso and the history of Italian poetry; Karl von HOLTEI (light dramatist and comic novelist, 12), histrionic complaints about his health and incessant travels, and friendly gossip; Heinrich and Charlotte STIEGLITZ (literary couple, Charlotte being famous for committing suicide to stimulate her husband's genius, note in the hand of Heinrich Stieglitz), sending their good wishes at Lehmann's wedding; Fanny LEWALD-STAHR (novelist, 7, and one to an unidentified female correspondent), discussing in a long and interesting letter of 16 March 1862 the position of women and the emancipation of Jews, and in 1869 responding vigorously to Lehmann's comments on women writers (together with 3 letters by her husband Adolf Stahr ); Leopold SCHEFER (poet, 4); Bogumil GOLTZ (author of social and ethnological works, 4); Karl August VARNHAGEN VON ENSE (poet, friend of Heine, and husband of the literary hostess Rahel Levin, 6, one partial); and others, one without signature, 48 letters in total, approximately 90 pages, 8vo and 4to (small modern labels in upper corner of first page throughout, occasional tears to centre folds).
